There is now cause for concern with Michigan State 1st-round quarterback prospect Connor Cook. Cook temporarily left the game in the first half when a hard hit left him favoring his right arm. Backup Tyler O’Connor then took over for the second possession of the game and immediately led the Spartans to a 10-play touchdown drive.
Cook went back into the game but clearly didn’t look well, completing only six of 20 pass attempts in the first half. So O’Connor took Cook’s place again and completed 6 of 11 passes in the second half. This makes the situation between the 1st-round quarterback prospects more complicated than it already was.
What made it complicated already is none of the quarterback prospects have really distinguished themselves. Many considered Cook the No. 1 quarterback prospect among the four projected into the first round. He was starting to distinguish himself, having thrown eight touchdown passes in Michigan State’s past two games.
But just as he was starts to look like the guy that can take over the No. 1 quarterback prospect, he gets injured. What makes it so bad is the injury is to his throwing shoulder so we don’t know when we’ll see him again. Meanwhile, the other quarterbacks projected into the first round have a chance to catch up with good days this weekend.
It looks like it’s going to take a while for the quarterback situation to sort itself out.
