TRAE WAYNES. C.
The plan the Minnesota Vikings had for No. 11 overall Trey Waynes coming in was for him to start Week 1. Veteran Terrance Newman isn’t getting any younger so putting him in there with Xavier Rhodes was a good plan. Only the plan didn’t work out so well as Newman took a drink from the fountain of youth.

Rhodes hasn’t been very good this year but Captain Munnerlyn has so the Vikings defense is off and running. Waynes doesn’t get the most playing time these days but has looked pretty good and shown improvement when on the field. We can’t blame him for Newman playing like he did when he was young this year.

At the same time, teams picking this early should get a player that can have a significant role right away. This pick is more developmental, putting the Vikings in good shape for the future as Newman ages. That’s not what Vikings had planned when they picked Waynes so the grade can only be so high.
.
