5. San Diego Chargers- Jaylon Smith, LB, Notre Dame

Manti Te’o’s inability to stay healthy and produce has left a major hole in the middle of the San Diego Chargers defense. This group is allowing 4.9 rushing yards per attempt which ranks as the second worst in the league. The issues on defense have trickled over to the offensive side of the ball where Philip Rivers is constantly playing catch up.

Notre Dame’s Jaylon Smith is an explosive athlete who makes plays from sideline to sideline. He features excellent instincts that he pairs with elite short-area burst to make plays behind the line of scrimmage.

Smith is a four-down linebacker who holds up in coverage and contributes on special teams. This is the type of player who instantly improves a defense.

His coverage ability helps separate him from other linebacker prospects. He’s athletic enough to stick with running backs and some receivers while also having the size to match up with tight ends.

Could also look at adding help along the offensive line, but most of their issues at this spot have been due to injury. Their real need is on the defensive side of the ball. Philip Rivers has proven he can win games on his own, but that style of play won’t take you far.
