2016 NFL Draft Scouting Report of Alabama’s Jonathan Allen
Jonathan Allen is one of the many talented defensive players on this roster. He and A’Shawn Robinson have dominated the point of attack. It’s really splitting hairs on what prospect is rated higher but both are on the 1st-round radar.
Allen is the more explosive of the two prospects showing the ability to close on the football. However, it’s his power that makes him so effective. He excels at delivering a jolt, gaining inside hands and creating space.
This clip shows Allen using the separation his length creates to disengage and put pressure on the quarterback. He also displays his surprising quickness as he closes on the ball.
Allen may feature some explosiveness but it’s his power that makes him so effective. His heavy hands allow him to control the action and toss blockers. This comes in handy when he’s asked to set the edge against the run and also helps him put pressure on the quarterback.
He’s a better pass rusher than most realize because he knows how to work both the speed and power rush. Allen is able to push the pocket from the defensive tackle position but also can gain the edge when playing defensive end.
This clip shows Allen pushing the pocket and putting a big hit on the quarterback:
It’ll be interesting to see what position Allen ends up playing in the NFL. He’s versatile enough to play several positions but appears to be a perfect fit as a 5-technique. Here he’d be able to use his ability to hold at the point of attack to set the edge against the run while also bringing some pressure.
No matter where he lands, Allen should be able to make an immediate impact and a physical presence to a defense.
