The days of fielding two big-hitting safeties is pretty much over thanks to the NFL’s continue evolution to a pass-heavy league. Teams need to have that Earl Thomas type who is capable of patrolling the deep middle. The 2016 Draft features a strong fit for that role in Ohio State’s Vonn Bell.
Ohio State’s defense was a major factor in the team’s success this year and Bell was a major contributor. He’s an explosive athlete who plays at a fast pace and trusts his reads. His instincts are top-notch where he’s able to read both the quarterback and developing routes.
He’s also fluid enough to drop down into the slot and handle some man coverage. His ball skills are another important part of his game as he’s able to grab interceptions.
Bell isn’t just a cover guy as he’s also able to come up and support the run. He’s more of a reliable tackler than a big hitter but he gets the job done.
Teams like the New York Giants and Pittsburgh Steelers should target Bell. The Giants have a big hitter in Landon Collins on the roster and need that cover guy. Bell would be an immediate upgrade for what’s on the roster at this point.
