17. Connor Cook, QB, Michigan State
I’m personally a big fan of Michigan State’s Connor Cook. However, I see why some have questions about his overall potential. Cook shows flashes of elite ability but also tends to have some lapses in his production. A lot of this can be tied to the type of offense run at Michigan State.
The Spartans operate a conservative offense that focuses on running the football and asks the quarterback to avoid turnovers. Cook simply hasn’t had the opportunities to make as many big plays as other quarterback prospect.
What he does show is strong leadership ability, good athleticism and solid thrown arm. Cook can make all the NFL throws and is use to running a more pro-style offense. He’d be a great fit for a veteran team needing a change at the quarterback spot.
The New York Jets and Houston Texans are the first two teams to come to mind. New York is in the playoff picture with Ryan Fitzpatrick under center. He’s playing well, but is by no means the long-term answer.
Cook’s experience operating in a run-heavy offense and on a team that wants to rely on its defense should be intriguing to the Jets. It’s important to note that just because Cook doesn’t have eye-popping numbers that he doesn’t have talent. This is a player with a ton of upside if given the opportunity.
