23. Austin Johnson, DT, Penn State
Penn State has produce some solid defensive tackles over the years with the likes of Jared Odrick, DaQuan Jones and Jordan Hill. Austin Johnson has a chance to follow in their footsteps and even surpass their production. There are several teams that need a player with Johnson’s run-stuffing ability.
Johnson is a thick and powerful defensive tackle. He uses his size and strength to occupy blockers and control the line of scrimmage. This is a player who often faces double teams and still holds at the point of attack.
He brings added value because he features the short-area burst to make plays away from his frame. This means he’s not just a space-eater and someone who can make play on the ball carrier. Johnson also provide a bit of a pass rush where he can push the pocket.
The Atlanta Falcons could use an inside presence like Johnson to boost their run defense. This is a team looking to rebuild its defense in the mold of the Seattle Seahawks. The ability to shutdown an opponent’s running game is key to any defense’s success.
Johnson could also be a fit for the Green Bay Packers who might need to replace B.J. Raji at the end of the year.
