5. Jared Goff, QB, Califorina
Despite a few bumps in the road, this has been a statement season for California’s Jared Goff. He helped lead the Golden Bears to a solid year while showing his next-level ability. Goff is the safest, most complete and NFL-ready quarterback in this draft. He’ll absolutely be in the mix to be one of the first players come April.
Goff is a quarterback who wins from the pocket thanks to his solid arm strength, quick decision making and accuracy. He excels at delivering a catchable ball that allows him receivers to pick up yards after the catch. This is also a tough individual who doesn’t let pressure impact his throws or decisions.
The questions surround Goff include his thin frame and the fact he doesn’t have elite arm strength. However, he should be able to put on some bulk once in an NFL weight program and he has more than enough arm strength to make all throws.
I have a hard time seeing the San Francisco 49ers or Cleveland Browns passing on the opportunity to bring Goff into the mix. He’s in-the-pocket style is different from what those teams have in Colin Kaepernick and Johnny Manziel.
It’ll be interesting to see if the Dallas Cowboys consider Goff if he’s on the board when they pick. Tony Romo’s injury issues and age are a cause for concern.
