If you’re a quarterback with a big arm, you’ll get every opportunity there is to succeed or fail. It doesn’t matter how unreliable you are or how badly you’ve played while in other spots. That has been exemplified to the fullest Wednesday with the Baltimore Ravens.

After losing his starting job due to ineffective play, Ryan Mallett, then with the Houston Texans, threw a hissy-fit. That hissy-fit caused him to miss the team’s charter flight to Miami for a Week 7 game with the Dolphins and get released. That wasn’t the first time Mallett showed the team that he was unreliable.

Back in training camp this year, he showed up late for practice after claiming his alarm clock broke. So the Texans had no choice but to cut him once he threw that hissy-fit and didn’t show up for the team’s flight to Miami. For most players across the NFL, that’s a ticket out of the league with no way back in.

But for Mallett, because he plays quarterback and has rare arm strength, it’s an opportunity to try his luck elsewhere. Aaron Wilson of the Houston Chronicle reported that they plan to work Mallett out on Wednesday. With the Texans, Mallett went 1-3 as a starter in 2015, throwing just three touchdowns to four picks with a 63.6 passer rating.

He was just too inaccurate, missing on throws he should have been able to make. The Ravens are desperate for a quarterback as Matt Schaub didn’t do much after starter Joe Flacco was lost for the year with a torn ACL and MCL. Quarterback is a hard position to play and Mallett has major league arm talent so he’ll always at least get a look.

If the Ravens end up depending on him, they better get him an alarm clock.
