Ohio State’s Pat Elflein 2016 NFL Draft Scouting Report

Pat Elflein is a nasty interior offensive lineman. He’s a perfect fit for Ohio State’s offensive style in that his best attribute is his run blocking skills. Elflein is one of several key members of the line that helped Ezekiel Elliott put up such huge numbers over the years.

The key to his success starts with his wide base and balance. Elflein uses leverage to generate a push in the running game or anchor against the pass rush. His nasty streak and raw strength also play a major role in his style of play.

He routinely drives defenders off the line of scrimmage and is able to turn them from the play. His heavy hands help him Velcro to the defender and control the action. This clip shows an example of Elflein’s power:

Elflein isn’t an elite athlete but he’s fluid enough to mirror the pass rush from his guard position. Again, the key is that he keeps a wide base and remains balanced. That balance allows him to absorb contact and reset.

This clip shows Elflein giving some initial ground but quickly stabilizing and shutting down the pass rush:

Elflein might not be an ideal fit for every team in the league, but will gain a lot of attention because of his physical play. Teams that run a power-running attack will likely be the most interested in his services. However, he’s a better athlete than most realize and could eventually adjust to a more zone-based system.
