The Raiders had injuries to their defensive backfield early this season to corner T.J. Carrie had to move to safety. That left the Raiders short-handed at corner so when the Redskins cut Amerson, their 2nd-round pick, the Raiders pounced. The were still hopeful about 2013 Hayden so it was a depth signing.
And Amerson played well, having to start pretty much right away as corners Neiko Thorpe and Keith McGill had injuries. He played very well during his time but when Carrie went back to corner, Amerson took the No. 3 slot. And over the next few games, Hayden continued to show he was a bust so he was demoted.
So when Amerson was put back in the starting role the last couple of games, he has played lights out. He has shown that he is clearly the best corner the Raiders have, allowing on three catches on 15 attempts for 29 yards in that span. Of those 15 attempts that came his way, 10 of them were defensed and he intercepted one of them.
In Week 11, he held Detroit Lions mercurial receiver Calvin Johnson, to one catch on four attempts with three passes defensed while defending him. Now, he leads the league in passes defensed with 19 of them to go with the two interceptions he has. Another plus in Amerson’s column is that he tackles well, not allowing too many yards after the catch.
