Surrounding Factors
One thing that will factor big in Amerson covering Maclin is the pressure put on Smith. Corners like to jump short routes for interceptions and if the pass-rush is getting there, they can do that more. There will not be enough time for a receiver to break open down the field on a double-move or blow by him.
Amerson has the kind of speed that isn’t going to allow receivers to simply blow by him as it is. So that leaves room for only double-moves and the Chiefs’ offensive line isn’t going to hold up long enough for that. Eric Fisher is a draft bust from 2013 that leads a unit that gives up the third most sacks in the NFL.
And despite losing Aldon Smith, edge-rusher Khalil Mack is red hot with three sacks in his last three games. Mario Williams Jr., the Raiders’ 2015 2nd-round pick, has come on to give the Raiders an interior pass-rush. Benson Mayowa, who’s replaced Smith at outside linebacker, has come alive rushing the passer as well.
The reason Smith had time to down the field to Maclin against the Bills is because the Bills have one of the worst pass-rushes in the NFL right now. Mack, Edwards and company are set to make things difficult on Smith. And when that happens, Smith gets overly conservative and the Cheifs offense doesn’t have much punch.
