Alabama running back Derrick Henry couldn’t have dreamed of a better year than he’s having. On December 31, he’ll play in the FBS semifinal with a chance to play for a National Championship. The 1,986 yards he rushed for broke Herschel Walker’s SEC mark for the most rushing yards in a season.
Henry is the leading rusher of the FBS’s with a chance to go over 2,000 yards in his next game. He’s also the favorite to win Heisman Trophy as he’s already starting to collect postseason awards. Thursday, Henry was the first running back to win the Maxwell Award since Mark Ingram in 2009.
He beat out Clemson quarterback Deshaun Watson and Stanford running back/return specialist Christian McCaffrey for it. The Maxwell Award is given to college football’s player of the year. It will be the same three guys will be the finalists for this year’s Heisman Trophy, which will be announced Saturday night.
Henry also won the Doak Walker Award, which is given to the country’s top running back. McCaffrey and LSU’s Leonard Fournette, the Heisman snub, were the two Henry his second award over. Henry joined Trent Richardson (2011) as the only Alabama players to win the Doak Walker Award in the process.
Also Thursday, Henry was chosen as the Walter Camp National Player of the Year. The Heisman would make it a nice sweep as a result of the way he came down the stretch of the season in November. Right now, all he’s focused on is his Alabama playing Michigan State in the Cotton Bowl on Dec. 31.
Then comes the first round of the 2016 NFL Draft!
Right?
