21. New York Jets (8-5)- Leonard Floyd, Edge, Georgia
The New York Jets are in the thick of the playoff race thanks the balance on both sides of the ball. Todd Bowles is a brilliant defensive coach, but it’s his offense that has surprised and kept this team in the mix. We can expect that the Jets will use some important resources this offseason to yet again address some defensive holes.
New York’s lack of an edge rusher is the biggest problem area on the defense. They rely heavily on exotic blitz packages that often times include someone coming from the secondary. This obviously pulls defenders out of coverage and creates holes in the defense.
Georgia’s Leonard Floyd features the type of quickness and burst needed to generate pressure off the edge. He plays with excellent balance that allows him to flatten out and purse the quarterback. Adding Floyd would give New York that edge threat they lack.
Floyd brings added value because he can also drop in coverage and support the run. His versatility will allow Bowles and company to continue to develop those exotic blitz packages.
It’ll be interesting to see if the Jets use an early pick to address the quarterback position. Ryan Fitzpatrick has had a strong year, but he isn’t the long-term answer.
