29. Cincinnati Bengals (10-3)- Austin Johnson, DT, Penn State

The Cincinnati Bengals have a really progressive draft strategy in that they don’t always look for someone to make an immediate impact. In fact, their past few 1st-round picks took a couple of years to see regular playing time.

Dre Kirkpatrick, Darqueze Dennard and Cedric Ogbuehi all spent significant time on the bench. This gives the Bengals a lot of depth and flexibility across the roster. They will likely stick with this strategy and look to bring the best available player for the future of the team.

Penn State’s Austin Johnson is the type of player that fits that strategy. He’s someone who can be slowly worked into the defensive line rotation and serve as a long-term replacement for Domata Peko.

Johnson is one of the top run defenders in this draft. He uses his size and strength to control the line of scrimmage. This is someone who can occupy blockers and hold his ground against double teams. He brings added value because he also has enough quickness to make plays away from his frame.

Cincinnati has dealt with a lot of injuries in their linebacking corps which might impact their draft decision. They have starters in place but this is an area on the roster that could use better depth.
