5. San Francisco 49ers (4-9)- Jaylon Smith, LB, Notre Dame
The San Francisco 49ers are in a tough spot as far as the draft is concerned. They need to find a long-term answer at quarterback but have limited options with Jared Goff off the board. Memphis’ Paxton Lynch is the next best option and this might be a little high for him.
Lynch is extremely talented but needs time to develop. The 49ers might feel better giving Blaine Gabbert another year as the starter and upgrading another position. In this mock, Notre Dame’s Jaylon Smith is available to help make the decision easier.
Smith is an elite athlete who routinely makes impact plays. He uses his speed to cover a ton of ground and make plays from sideline to sideline. Smith also does a good job reading his keys, attacking and bringing down the ball carrier behind the line of scrimmage.
This is a four-down linebacker who excels in pass coverage and can contribute on special teams. His ability to hold up in coverage is key because inside linebackers are being asked to fill this role more and more.
The 49ers defense was at its best when Navorro Bowman and Patrick Willis were manning the middle of the field. Smith has a chance to make have a similar career as Willis.
