We all knew that running back Todd Gurley was a phenomenal prospect coming out of the draft this year. The torn ACL he suffered last year was the only question-mark anyone had in regards to him. And the Rams took good care of him after they drafted him No. 10 overall in the 2015 NFL Draft.
They didn’t play in the first two games of the season and eased in for a third with a couple of carries. But when he got started, he got started, racking up 575 yards rushing in his first four starts. He’s cooled off considerably lately but still went over the G-mark, (1,000-yards) with two games to spare Thursday night.
Gurley 21 carries for 48 yards and a touchdown to help in the St, Louis Rams’ 31-23victory over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. So far, in just 11 starts. Gurley has 1,023 yards, averaging 4.9 yards per carry. And in the process, he’s looked like everything the Rams thought they were getting when they drafted him.
Head coach Jeff Fisher is especially pleased with the play of his No. 10 overall pick, telling the Rams’ official website after after Thursday’s victory,”He got a late start, as we all know. Everybody knows we’re going to run it, and he still got 1,000. That speaks volumes for him.”
And that includes an offensive line that allows him to be hit in the backfield darn-near every play. Gurley is often able to make something out of nothing to become the third Rams rookie to go over 1,000 yards. The other two, Eric Dickerson (1,808 in 1983) and Jerome Bettis (1,429 in 1993) are in the Hall of Fame.
We’ll see if Gurley can live up to that standard but hitting the G-mark in his first season isn’t a bad start.
