QB. Alabama. Joe Namath. '65. player. 30.
In the 1965 AFL Draft, the New York Jets selected quarterback Joe Namath with the first overall pick. And the Jets got everything they wanted and then some out of their franchise quarterback. He played in the ’60s and ’70s so he didn’t have the sexy numbers today’s franchise quarterbacks have.

In his era, the rules were different as far as when a cornerback can put their hands on a receiver. They also didn’t have the offenses that featured the short passing attacks to boost their completion percentage. And near the goal line, they either ran it four times in a row or kicked a field goal after three runs if they didn’t get a touchdown.

So Namath didn’t get the passing touchdown numbers he would have gotten if he were playing today. In his day, they ran the ball to controll it and when they threw it, they threw it down the field. And Namath was great at that as he was one of the best throwers of the football of all time.

If you were to watch him next to Marino, you wouldn’t be able to tell the difference between the two. Namath made the Pro Bowl five times in his 13 years and made the All-Pro team just once. But most importantly, he led the Jets to their only Super Bowl win in 1968.
