And the Kansas City Chiefs were a part of that movement as they did it to keep up with the Davis and the Raiders. And from that run, they selected 6’7″, 287-pound Buck Buchanan from Grambling No. 1 overall in 1963.</p> <p>With that tremendous size for the ’60s, Buchanan was a freak athlete, running a 4.9 40. That combination of size and speed works well in today’s NFL so imagine how dominant he was in the ’60s. His power made it hard to run at him and his quickness got him into the backfield for sacks. He also used that quickness to go sideline to sideline and down the field to make tackles. And with all that, Buchanan was extremely durable, playing in 182 career games that included a string of 166 straight.

Buchanan helped his Chiefs get to two Super Bowls, winning one in 1969 after losing one in 1966. In his 13 years in the NFL, Buchanan was an All-Pro four times and went to eight Pro Bowls. And yes, he has his gold jacket, a bust and his place in the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
