Former Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Josh Freeman once appeared to be on his way in the NFL. In his second year in the league in 2010, he went 10-6, throwing for 3,451 yards, 25 TDs to 6 INTs with a quarterback rating of 95.9. At that point, he had the NFL world waiting for him to make that jump to elite quarterback but he disappointed.
That led to him getting waved by the Buccaneers and signed by the Minnesota Vikings, where he was no better. Anytime you’re not an entrenched starter for an NFL team, any playing time you get is an audition for another team. And since things didn’t go so well for him with the Vikings in 2013, he’s been bouncing around the NFL.
His next stop will be the Indianapolis Colts, who just signed the former 1st-round pick Tuesday. The Colts are are uncertain at quarterback these days with Andrew Luck not knowing when he’ll play again. Matt Hasselbeck is doubtful for Sunday while fellow backup Charlie Whitehurst is on injured reserve.
So the Colts had to sign Freeman because Stephen Morris was the only healthy quarterback on the team. And Morris, who has also bounced around the NFL, hasn’t played a single snap in the league. The Colts actually still have a chance to win the AFC South with a win and some help.
At the same time, with the way Colts quarterbacks are getting hurt, Freeman may have a shot to make it back and stick in the NFL.
Stay tuned!
