Temple’s Tyler Matakevich Scouting Report.
Tyler Matakevich has been a very productive college linebacker who is looking to take the next step to the NFL. His draft stock was helped this year because of how well both he and the team performed. However, he still lacks a lot of the skills needed to succeed at the next level.
Matakevich is a limited athlete who doesn’t have the quickness or burst coveted by evaluators. He’s a methodical mover who is often a step or two late to the football. His lack of power and strength is also a concern.
This clip shows Matakevich failing to take on a block and react to the running backs cut:
NFL linebackers are expected to make these types of plays and prevent long runs. A more athletic linebacker would’ve been able to get in position quicker and work off the block.
Matakevich’s only chance to stick on an NFL roster is his instincts and awareness. He does a good job reading his keys and putting himself in proper position. It’s obvious he studies the game and works at his craft.
This clip shows Matakevich reading the quarterback and following the ball to pull down an interception:
However, the truth remains that he just isn’t athletic enough to make impact plays in the NFL. He’s the type of player who defensive coordinators will target and look to exploit. His lack of speed means he’ll struggle holding up against running backs and tight ends in man coverage. He also doesn’t show the power to be considered a run-stuffer.
