Why wait until Black Monday?

If you have dirt in your house that’s causing you not to win games, you might as well clean it right away. Such is the thinking of the Cleveland Browns, who fired GM Ray Farmer before their loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers Sunday. This firing should be of no surprise to anyone the NFL world over.

Anytime we’ve heard from Farmer, it never seemed to be a result of anything he had done well. He embarrassed the Browns by getting suspended by the NFL for texting coaches during games. Browns owner Jimmy Haslam interfered with Farmers first draft, opting to take quarterback Johnny Manziel.

But his 1st-round pick, cornerback Justin Gilbert, has been a dud so far as well as his two 2015 1st-round picks. NT Danny Shelton and OL Cameron Erving aren’t burning it up as rookies either. The Browns have had seven 1st-round picks since 2012 and neither of them have had a big impact.

His head coach, Mike Pettine, will follow Farmer out the door Sunday after just his second season. Multiple GM fails have lead to draft pick and head coach fails, leading to futility in recent years.  So now, the Browns need to find a GM that can put the organization back together.

There are no fans in the NFL besides Oakland Raiders fans that deserve it as much as Browns fans. The “Dawg Pound” and “Black Hole are desperate to see some good football played by their teams on Sundays. With Farmer and Pettine gone, we have to wonder if troubled quarterback Johnny Manziel is next.
