Arkansas Alex Collins 2016 Scouting Report.
Alex Collins is a workhorse running back who has had an extremely productive career. He’s the type of runner who is capable of taking over a game. Arkansas leaned on Collins to carry the load each and every week.
Collins is a patient runner who waits for his blocks to set up and then explodes through the hole. His quick-twitch ability allows him get up to full speed and pick up big chunks of yards. This clip shows Collins identifying the running lane and taking it to the house:
He is able to maximize his athletic ability because of running instincts. Collins does a great job reading his blocks and picking the correct hole. He’s able to make quick and balanced cuts while running downhill.
Collins isn’t just a speed back as he also runs with toughness and power. He keeps his legs churning through contact which allows him to break tackles. This clip shows Collins fighting through several tackles and finishing with a touchdown:
Two areas where Collins needs to improve are as a pass catcher and blocker. Collins is a willing blocker but needs to be more aggressive. He tends to allow the pass rusher to initiate contact which makes it difficult for Collins to hold his ground.
Arkansas didn’t ask Collins to catch the ball out of the backfield on a consistent basis. However, he does show solid hands and the ability to pick up yards after the catch. The key to his ability to catch the football will come down to more experience and opportunities.
Collins is an excellent running back prospect and could come off the board earlier than many expect. He has the skill set needed to make an immediate impact in the NFL.
