Rex Ryan hires twin to be his defensive coordinator
In year two of his head coaching stint with the buffalo Bills, Rex Ryan needs to put his imprint on the defense more. Gone will be guys like Mario Williams, who don’t fit his scheme and made sure the football world knew it this year. You’ll probably see Ryan bring in Muhammad Wilkerson, whom he had with the New York Jets.
He’ll obviously put a lot of pieces together to fit in with what he likes to do on defense. But being a head coach requires him to be involved in all facets of the game, taking time away from the defense. So he’ll need someone who thinks just like he does to coordinate his defense just like he would.
So Sunday night, the Bills announced that former New Orleans Saints defensive coordinator Rob Ryan has been hired. Rob is Rex’s twin brother and he’ll be the Bills’ assistant head coach/defensive coordinator. The both learned their blitzing styles from ’85 Chicago Bears defensive coordinator Buddy so this should be a good marriage.
Rex said of the hiring, “I’m excited to have Rob join our staff and I think he will be a great asset for our defense. He has a tremendous working knowledge of our schemes and I look forward to his input. On a personal note, it’s been a number of years since we have worked together and so we are both really looking forward to this opportunity.”
Rob was fired this past year after his defense finished the season ranked with the worst units in NFL history. Rex had a decent defense this past year but in wasn’t what the NFL world is used to seeing from him. Neither of them had the kind of players that fit what they like to do but with some changes coming to Buffalo they’ll get a chance to put their heads together and make it happen.
And they’re motivated after disappointing seasons this past year.
