2016 NFL Draft Scouting Reports: Ohio State’s Darron Lee 2016 Scouting Report

Ohio State’s Darron Lee 2016 Scouting Report.
Darron Lee is an undersized but highly athletic linebacker prospect. His athleticism is what draws the eyes of scouts and why he’s mentioned as a potential early-round pick. However, there are holes in his game that need to be addressed before he’ll be ready to make an impact at the next level.
Lee’s lack of size and strength is a real concern. He struggles playing around the line of scrimmage and can often be controlled by blockers. His lack of aggressiveness in taking on blocks opens a lot of running lanes for the opposing running back.
This clip shows Lee failing to meet the offensive lineman with authority in the hole which allows the running back to pick up the first down:
Lee also has a tendency to play hesitant and appears not to trust his reads. He’ll stand flat-footed after the snap where he then reacts a few steps later than the other defenders on the field. Lee is able to still make an impact because he has the explosiveness to overcome his slow reads.
However, there are plenty of situations where he’s a step late and allows the running back to pick up big chunks of yardage. This problem will only get more exposed at the NFL level as the offensive lineman and running backs have better athleticism and football IQ.
Lee does have potential thanks to his athleticism and fluid movements. This is most noticeable when he’s asked to drop in coverage. He’s able to flip his hips and run with backs, tight ends and some receivers. His instincts in coverage are far more advanced than his instincts as a run defender.
Ohio State also asks Lee to blitz off the edge where he shows good snap awareness and the ability to generate pressure.
Lee would really benefit from another year of experience at the college level.
