New York Giants promote Ben McAdoo to head coach
When your head coach steps down after 12 years and you have one of the better quarterbacks in the NFL, you must do what you can to keep him comfortable. All the top quarterbacks in the NFL have this thing called stability. Being able to count on your offensive line, running backs, tight ends and receivers is one thing.
But knowing your offensive system like the back of your hand is an absolute must if you’re a franchise quarterback. So the New York Giants had a choice to make this offseason in regards to quarterback Eli Manning after firing head coach Tom Coughlin stepped down right after the season.
And NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport reported Wednesday that the Giants made the right choice, promoting offensive coordinator Ben McAdoo to head coach. McAdoo was seen as a favorite for a while since Manning himself voiced his desire to stay in McAdoo’s offense after having his best statistical year in the NFL in it.
According to Rapoport, Manning went as far as going to ownership to vouch for McAdoo. It’s actually starting to look like the Giants are going to keep their entire coaching staff together minus Coughlin. Rapoport also reported that Steve Spagnuolo is expected to remain the team’s defensive coordinator.
The Giants had one of the worst defenses in football last season, though a lack of personnel and injuries played huge role there. Expect the Giants to focus mainly on the defense in free agency and the draft this offseason. That way, Spagnuolo gets fair shot with a unit that has some pieces.
And for the players, they get stability in their respective systems.
