Alabama’s Jarran Reed 2016 Scouting Report.

Jarran Reed is a physical defensive line prospect who has made a major impact throughout his career. He teamed with several other highly talented players to form one of the most dominant defensive lines in college football. However, Reed does jump off the screen as someone capable of quickly making a name for himself at the next level.

Reed is a powerful athlete who controls the line of scrimmage. He is committed to firing off the ball, gaining inside hands and extending his arms. This allows him to hold at the point of attack and disengage when the ball heads in his direction.

This clip shows Reed getting an initial push, extending his arms and quickly disengaging to make a play away from his frame:

Alabama often asks Reed and his fellow defensive linemen to anchor and occupy blockers. However, he also flashes the ability to penetrate and make plays behind the line of scrimmage. Reed has deceptive quickness and closing speed.

He’ll never be an elite pass rusher, but he’ll find a way to generate some pressure. This is mainly thanks to his strength and non-stop motor.

Reed is system versatile, but would look great playing the 5-technique in a 3-4 defense. This would allow him to set the edge against the run while also using his athleticism to make some plays in the back field. No matter where he lines up, Reed will find a way to make an impact and thus be a great addition to any defense.
