Eastern Kentucky’s Noah Spence 2016 Scouting Report

Noah Spence is an effective pass-rusher who is still trying to rebuild his image after several off-field incidents. Spence started his career at Ohio State where he was a top-rated recruit and early contributor. However, he was forced to leave the program after he had some personal issues off the field.

Spence has since moved on to Eastern Kentucky where he has put himself back in the NFL draft discussion. He gains attention because of his elite burst off the line of scrimmage and ability to get after the quarterback.

This is also a balance athlete who can turn the corner and flatten out around the edge. The clip below shows Spence getting a great jump off the line, beating the offensive tackle to the edge and flattening to register the sack:

There’s no doubting Spence’s potential as a pass rusher, but he has work to do in order to become a complete player. He struggles when it comes to supporting the run where he can get moved off the line of scrimmage.

Spence needs to be more consistent with his hand usage and fight for inside placement. Too often, he allows the blocker into his frame where he’s then sealed from the play. His struggles playing with power also show up in his pass rush.

He is too focused on attacking the edge and using his speed to generate pressure. Spence must develop a more rounded pass-rush arsenal that features a power move. He has the physical skills set needed to be a top-notch NFL player, but needs to remain focused.
