Washington Redskins 2016 Mock Draft

This is the first in a series doing a full 2016 mock draft for an individual team. First up is a team that outperformed even their own wildest expectations for 2015: the Washington Redskins. As always this is a mock of what I think that the team will do, not what I would do as the team’s decision maker.

1st: Jon Bullard, DL Florida.
Paying Cousins and Reed will mean that Hatcher and Knighton will be elsewhere in 2016. They need defensive line talent in this scenario. Bullard can play the 3 and 5 primarily for them.

2nd: Cj Prosise RB Notre Dame
The Skins like Matt Jones, but he fumbles far too much to be the prime back. Prosise is a good inside/out running back and he catches the ball very well. He’s certainly unlikely to become a prime back who gets 300-350 touches a season but with Jones and Chris Thompson he doesn’t need to be one.

3rd: Christian Hackenberg, QB Penn State
Cousins insurance. Hackenberg can sit behind Cousins in 2016(and maybe 2017) and perhaps replaces him if he can’t repeat his 2015. There’s no denying his arm talent, but he has a lot of issues that need to be fixed.

4th: Blake Martinez, LB Stanford
The Skins have 3 ILBs about to hit free agency and a 4th who is vastly overpaid(and probably will be cut). Martinez is an tough tackler who anticipates well, but he’s not fast enough to be a 3 down player. They could use him as depth/spot starter.

5th: Duke Williams, WR Auburn
As physically talented as any wideout in this draft, but multiple disciplinary issues led to his dismissal from Auburn. He’s still a project as a wideout, especially playing in that option offense, but you can see the potential ooze out of him.

6th(from New Orleans): Evan Boehm, OL Missouri
Big size for a center and the Redskins need talent at center right now. Trying to find a starter this late is asking a lot, but it would be a low bar for him to clear.

7th(from Tampa Bay): Tanner McEvoy, TE Wisconsin.
Lost in the shuffle of Jordan Reed’s mega season is that the redskins were losing tight ends left and right due to injury. Reed is also injury prone. McEvoy has played safety, quarterback and tight end in his long college career and has an NFL level body. This is a developmental pick, but one with some upside.

7th: Jared Norris, LB Utah
The latest end/linebacker tweener to come out of Utah. Norris can play almost anywhere in the linebacker corps. The skins will have him tween between inside and out.
