Chicago Bears 2016 NFL draft
This is the second in a series doing a full 2016 mock draft for an individual team. First up is a team that had a very up and down and injury plagued 2015: the Chicago Bears. As always this is a mock of what I think that the team will do, not what I would do as the team’s decision maker.
1st: Shaq Lawson, DL/LB Clemson
Even though the Bears have talent on the edge currently, they found out this past season that they need much more than just 2 good rushers. Lawson can play in a 3 point stance or standing up and should contribute quickly. At the very least it allow Fangio to move McPhee around the formation which is where he excels.
2nd: Vonn Bell, DB Ohio State
The Bears had a lot of issues in the secondary: some injury, some talent. Bell might not be a starter immediately for them but he should contribute early. When Antrelle Rolle is a starter for your team at safety, you need some young talent.
3rd: Cardale Jones, QB Ohio State
The Bears are stuck with Cutler for probably another season or two, Jones could be the future but with Cutler in place they can teach Jones to use his talents properly.
4th: Willie Beavers, OL Western Michigan
Beavers is an interesting project who projects to be a better pass blocker than run blocker. The Bears aren’t in dire need of an offensive tackle, but they badly need depth.
5th: Eric Striker, OLB Oklahoma
If any team can find a role for Striker, they’ll get an extremely fast attacker from the edge. But he’s very small for that position. Perhaps if he’s used as a blitzing strong safety? He’s probaly never going to be a full time starter, but he could find a role in sub packages.
6th: Jerell Adams, TE South Carolina
Adams never really put it together for the Gamecocks, but he has an NFL body and soft hands. He’s a big project, but in the hands of the right coach could become a contributor.
7th: Luke Rhodes, LB William & Mary
He was a dominating player at the FCS level. He might only become a special teams ace that you put in for run downs, but here in the 7th round that’s value.
