After a 1-3 start to the 2015 season, the Miami Dolphins decided to fire head coach Joe Philbin. Philbin was in the midst of his fourth year with the team in which he had a record of 24-28 for. Then when the offseason came, the Dolphins made a lot of sweeping changes to their its front office.

Mike Tannenbaum replaced general manager Dennis Hickey with director of college scouting Chris Grier. And he and hired Chicago Bears offensive coordinator Adam Gase to be the new head coach. With that now in place, the Dolphins are left to make some big payroll decisions regarding players.

And Tannenbaum has hinted that the Dolphins will look to restructure the contract of defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh. He’s the guy that signed a 6-year, $114 million contract in March, with $60 million guaranteed, making him the highest-paid defensive player in NFL history.

Suh’s base salary was only $985,000 in 2015 with $25.5 million coming in the form of a signing bonus. In 2016, Suh is due $23.4 million, a number usually reserved for franchise quarterbacks. Tannenbaum isn’t okay with that nor should he be so his plan is definitely to do something about it.

The Dolphins need to fill a few holes if they’re going to be competitive in an improving AFC East. So what they need right now is to gain as much cap room as they can before free agency comes. But the new regime in Miami may have a problem convincing Suh to take any kind of slice in salary just one year in.
