The Oakland Raiders got themselves a dynamic duo to build in 2014!

In the first round, they picked outside linebacker Khalil Mack, now the most dominant defensive player in the NFL. In the second round, they picked quarterback Derek Carr, an emerging elite quarterback now. And in the third round, the Raiders picked guard Gabe Jackson a young, emerging guard.

With their first three picks in 2015, you could tell the Raiders are building around Mack and Carr. In the first round, they added receiver Amari Cooper, a future superstar to get open and catch passes from Carr. In the second round, the Raiders picked defensive lineman Mario Edwards Jr. to provide an interior pass-rush.

So when Mack beats his man around the corner, opposing quarterbacks have nowhere to step up. Then in the third round, they picked tight end Clive Walford to work the middle and threaten the defense down the seam. And all three of these picks affected how the first three picks in 2014 played in 2015

After absolutely light it up at first, Carr’s production tailed off as Cooper started playing with injuries. From weeks 10-15, where Edwards came into his own, Mack had 11 sacks and none in the last two games with Edwards out injured. So we can see the team building with the pieces put around Mack and Carr as they look to add more in the 2016 NFL Draft.
