Notre Dame’s Nick Martin 2016 Scouting Report.

Nick Martin is an average prospect who is pretty much a finished product. He’s maxed out as an athlete and as far as his technique is concerned. However, that doesn’t me he can’t contribute at the next level. He just might be someone that serves as a stop-gap solution.

This issue is that Martin just isn’t a great athlete and struggles with his pad level. He tends to play too high which allows the defender to get into his frame. This clip is an example of Martin raising his pads, giving ground and getting forced into the face of the quarterback:

Martin also isn’t a natural bender and will get off balanced as the play develops. Often times, his shoulders will get out in front of his body as he reaches to throw a block. His limited arm length also contributes to this issue.

Despite his limitations, Martin is a hard worker who fights to gain inside hands. His heavy hands allow him to Velcro to the defender once engaged. He is able to generate a push off the line from time to time because of his hand placement and the fact he keeps his legs moving.

There’s a spot in the NFL for a player like Martin, but it’s hard to see him develop into a top-end starter. It’s likely he has a journey-man type career where he sees time as a starter and backup. Any chance for a bigger role would heavily depend on Martin’s ability to keep his pads down.
