DeForest Buckner, DL, Oregon

Oregon’s DeForest Buckner is rare physical specimen thanks to his combination of size, length and athleticism. There are many humans with his size that are capable of moving with his quickness and fluidity. This is why a lot of evaluators have fallen in love with Buckner as a prospect.

However, the hype is too great for my taste. ESPN’s Mel Kiper Jr. had Buckner as a top-5 pick in his first mock draft of the year. He references Buckner’s measurables and potential to develop into a dominant player.

The fact is that Buckner just doesn’t show the tenacity and explosiveness needed to be rated so highly. He’s not a natural pass rusher and registered a majority of his sacks thanks to being more physically gifted than his opponent.

This won’t be the case in the NFL as everyone is an elite athlete and also play with improve technique.

Buckner is a talented player and solid prospect. He’s someone who can come in and hold at the point of attack, set the edge and generate some pressure. This is someone that would represent better value at the end of the first round.

We’ve seen plenty of players who provided good production but fail to meet expectations because they came off the board too high. Tyson Jackson is a name that comes to mind when I look at Buckner’s situation.
