2016 NFL Draft: LSU’s Jalen Mills 2016 Scouting Report

LSU’s Jalen Mills 2016 Scouting Report.
Jalen Mills is a versatile defender who has seen action at safety, cornerback and in the slot. He has shown promise at each of these positions but will benefit from focusing on just one area at the next level. Based on his play, Mills would bring the most value spending the majority of his time focusing at cornerback.
His ability to succeed at cornerback is thanks to his overall athleticism and fluid hips. Mills does a good job changing direction and sticking with his target. He features solid size and excellent arm length that helps him match up against bigger targets.
Mills is also a willing run defender who isn’t afraid to take on blocks or attack bigger running backs. His time in the slot provided him experience as a blitzer where he showed good snap awareness and a closing burst.
A lot of his draft stock depends on upside and the hope his instincts will improve when he focuses on one position. The clip below is an example of how Mills can get lost at time while playing zone. Please note that the video highlights Mills’ teammate Tre’Davious White. Mills is lined up in the slot and wears No. 28.
Mills is the type of prospect who may need a year of coaching before he’s ready to contribute on a consistent basis. He needs time to work on reading the quarterbacks, identifying the developing routes and picking up on keys.
His ability to locate and track the ball also needs some work. This is another area of his game that will improve with more experience.
