2016 NFL Draft: Texas A&M’s Germain Ifedi 2016 Scouting Report

Texas A&M’s Germain Ifedi 2016 Scouting Report.
Germain Ifedi is an intriguing prospect because of his natural athleticism and upside. He features excellent size, length and the long arms needed to get his hands out on the defender. His measurables are exactly what evaluators look for in an offensive lineman prospect.
The issue is that despite three years as a starter, he is still very raw as far as his technique is concerned. He struggles with his hand placement where he tends to get outside on the shoulder rather than inside. This is a problem because it will lead to a high number holding penalties at the next level.
Ifedi also routinely gets an early jump on the snap and is offsides on a majority of the passing plays. This clip shows an example of him moving before the ball:
The key to Ifedi’s success at the next level lies with a position switch where he moves inside to guard. He was very effective at that position a few years ago where he showed 1st round potential. Ifedi obviously lacks some confidence playing in space.
This is likely why he gets an early start on passing plays because he’s worried about protecting the edge. Moving inside to guard would play to Ifedi’s strengths as he has the raw power to move defenders off the line of scrimmage in the run game.
He also does a good job delivering a strong jolt off the snap while possessing the athleticism to throw blocks on the move. The fact he plays with a wide base and low pad level helps him anchor in pass protection.
I have Ifedi rated as a guard and in the 2nd round range. That grade changes dramatically if he is seen as a tackle only.
Current Draft Position: 2nd Round
