Cam Newton brings in a new day with NFL MVP award
The foregone conclusion has officially come to a conclusion!
Mercurial Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton was named the AP NFL MVP on Saturday night. And it wasn’t even close as The Associated Press gave him 48 of the 50 possible votes. New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady and Arizona Cardinals quarterback Carson Palmer were the co-runner-ups with a vote a piece.
Newton’s 26 total touchdowns and one interception in his last eight regular season games in 2015 had much to do with it. The way Newton won the NFL MVP award tells us there’s a new day at the quarterback position in the league. Brady and Manning are on the way out and there’s no way they could lift their respective teams the way Newton did this year.
As a passer, Newton threw for 3,837 yards, 35 TDs, 10 INTs and a quarterback rating of 99.2. He also majorly contributed to the running game with 636 rushing yards and 10 TDs in his magical season. And since the NFL is a cop-cat league, Newton may have created a new prototype at the quarterback position.
The debate has raged on for years over whether or not a running quarterback can get you to the Super Bowl. Many say that only traditional pocket-passers could do that as running quarterbacks are too often injured. But that was before a 6’6″, 260-pounder that can run over linebackers became a franchise quarterback.
Oh yeah, and he’s great in the pocket too so he can beat you in too many ways for you to defend. For goodness sakes, the Panthers can give the ball to Newton to put the game away in the fourth quarter. There’s nothing he doesn’t do for his team outside play defense and he might be good at that if given a chance.
All there is left for the new league MVP is to finish it all off on Sunday with a Super Bowl win.
