New Washington Redskins starting quarterback Kirk “You like that!” Cousins has made Robert Griffin III obsolete in Washington. So much so, he didn’t even get to be the backup for Cousins, sitting on the sidelines in street clothes. The reason for it is the Redskins couldn’t afford to have RG III get hurt on the field.

The Redskins would have been on the hook for the $16.155 million if RG III had been injured. But they can now cut RG III and must do so before March 9, when his $16.155 million is guaranteed. NFL Media’s Albert Breer reported Friday the RG III has passed his exit physical with the team

But it’s not that simple as Cousins has yet to be re-signed and can become a free agent soon. General manager Scot McCloughan said last month that Washington might wait until the new league year launches on March 9 to cut RG III.

He told the Washington Post, “The thing that’s good about where we are right now is, we have until March 9. That’s why I want to sit with the coaches — and not just the coordinators, position coaches; everybody — and get a feel for it, because [Griffin] is a good football player, he’s a really good person, and he’s under contract. And that’s where we are right now.”

So you can understand why McCloughan isn’t in such a hurry to get rid of RG III. He would look awfully foolish if Cousins didn’t re-sign, leaving him empty-handed at quarterback going into 2016. So we will need to keep our eyes on Cousins’ situation to know exactly when and if RG III is cut.

If he is, there will be interest from other teams.
