Washington Redskins in a pickle at quarterback
As unbelievable it sounds, the Washington Redskins still have drama at the quarterback position. Kirk Cousins took over the starting job in 2015 and led the Redskins to an NFC East division title. And all they needed was for former starter Robert Griffin III pass his exit physical so they can cut him and save $16 million.
They actually could have cut him already but Cousins’ contract is up and the Redskins don’t want to be empty-handed. It’s starting to look like they have him for good reason as a team source told ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter on Tuesday that the Redskins and Cousins have broken off negotiations.
Another source recently told ESPN that the two sides were not close in earlier discussions and that the gap had not been closed in the ensuing weeks. The source also told Schefter that no further talks are scheduled and it’s not a foregone conclusion the Redskins will use the franchise tag on Cousins.
The Redskins have until March 1 to apply the franchise tag for a cost of approximately $20 million. They want to sign Cousins to a long-term deal but they’re only willing to do so at the right price. If Cousins hits the open market, there will be interest in him from teams needing a quarterback.
But that doesn’t mean those teams out there are willing to give him the fat contract he wants. Cousins had a great 2015 but only 25 career regular-season starts don’t make him a proven player. He’s had problems with interceptions in the past so it may take another good year to prove he’s over that.
A franchise tag to prove it is ideal but will the Redskins use it?
But that tag means they let RGIII go and they can still lose Cousins.
The Redskins are in quite a pickle.
