The Dallas Cowboys have been known to take a gamble on talented players with troubled pasts. They have-the-field programs that feature ex-Cowboys that have had problems themselves. Guys like Michael Irvin lead the way for these youngsters and for the most part, they’re successful with it.

But in 2015, that wasn’t the case as the Cowboys drafted Randy Gregory in the second-round after he failed a drug test at the 2015 NFL Scouting Combine, to drop him out of the first round. Gregory’s problems with drugs have now reared their ugly head just one year into his NFL career.

Gregory has just been suspended without pay for the first four games of the 2016 regular season for violating the NFL Policy and Program for Substances of Abuse. Gregory is okay to participate in all the offseason and preseason practices and games. But he will miss the first quarter of the 2016 regular season and every rep is important to young players.

He already missed the first quarter of his first season due to injury and didn’t have a great year.

According NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport, this suspension comes behind Gregory failing a total of four drug tests. The second and third ones resulted in fines and the next one will result in a half-season suspension. The Cowboys have already given up on 2015 free agent Greg Hardy, who continues to have his troubles.

Everything doesn’t work for everyone and as of right now, the Cowboys’ programs didn’t work for two players in one year. The Cowboys should probably stop taking on such players to avoid messes like this. Now, the Cowboys will be looking for yet another edge-rusher in free agency or the draft.
