California’s Kenny Lawler 2016 Scouting Report

Kenny Lawler is a long and lean wide receiver prospect. He does most of his damage by high-pointing the ball in contested situations. Lawler has a lot of potential, but lacks the consistency to be considered a top-end prospect. He needs to work on several aspects of his game before he’s ready to make an impact in the NFL.

The biggest concern surrounding his game is the fact that he drops too many balls. This doesn’t appear to be a hands issue but more about concentration. He needs to focus on watching the ball into his hands rather than looking to make a move after the catch.

Lawler also needs to be more committed to using his hands as he catches the ball against his frame too often. Some of his drops didn’t just fall harmlessly to the ground, but were deflected and intercepted.

He remains an interesting prospect because of his size, wingspan and potential. Lawler does have strong hands and will make some spectacular catches from time to time. He does a good job timing his jumps and attacking the ball at its highest point.

Draft Breakdown’s gif creator is down at the moment but you can see Lawler adjusting his route and making a play in a contested situation by clicking here and scrolling to the 3:43 mark.

Players with his size and leaping ability typically get enough attention to get drafted. If he’s willing to put the time and effort into improving there’s a chance Lawler develops into a starting receiver. However, there’s an equal chance that his drops keep him from making a roster.
