No one should be surprised here!
Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones has made it clear this whole offseason that he wants Tony Romo to be his starting quarterback for the next 4-5 years. Yet 99.9 percent of the people that do mock drafts have the Cowboys taking a Romo’s eventual successor in the 2016 NFL Draft.
They site Aaron Rodgers going to the Green Bay Packers but the Packers were in a different situation. The Packers were already loaded and felt like they could go to the Super Bowl without a draft. They took Rodgers because he fell all the way down to them at No. 24 overall.
The Cowboys have a talented team that fell apart because of multiple injuries to key players in 2015. And if they can get one more star, the kind of player you get at No. 4 overall, it can put them over the top. Of course, Jones talked to Romo to gage his committment level to playing into the future.
Romo is still a good quarterback and will lead them back into the playoffs for the 2016 season. And what the Packers did with Rodgers could be done with a quarterback outside of the first round. The Cowboys need to take advantage of having such a high pick with such a talented team by adding a star plus there’s no Rodgers in the 2016 draft.
Former Cowboys GM Gil Brandt found out from Jones himself that he’s not taking a quarterback at No. 4, telling NFL.com, “Jerry told me recently that he will unequivocally not take a quarterback at No. 4, where the Cowboys draft this year.
“I believe him. It makes sense if you think Romo will make a full recovery from offseason surgery, will be your starter for at least three more years, and your team has a window of opportunity that will remain open by filling more glaring needs with the top pick in the draft.”
