7. David DeCastro

Draft Pick: 2012 Round 1, Pick 24

The Steelers practically sprinted to the podium in 2012 to draft David DeCastro. The best interior of the class, Pittsburgh drafted DeCastro at 24th overall and anticipated him to be an immediate starter. During the pre-draft process, the guard out of Stanford was praised for his pass blocking and a lightning-quick first step.

DeCastro was anticipated to be an immediate starter at right guard, but a severe knee injury in the team’s third preseason game limited him. The torn ACL and MCL caused DeCastro to miss all but the last four games of the season. However, the injury did not hinder his development and he made his first pro bowl in 2015. The strength of DeCastro’s game is his athleticism, allowing him to pull in the Steelers’ run game. His ability to get outside and clear out blockers sprung many big runs for Le’Veon Bell and DeAngelo Williams.

With one more year on his rookie contract, the Steelers will likely look to lock the guard out of Stanford up to a long-term deal this off season.
