Pittsburgh Steelers: Best Draft Picks of the 2010’s
By Kris Rogers
5. Kelvin Beachum
Draft Pick: 2012 Round 7 Pick 248
Drafted with the Steelers’ fourth seventh-round pick in 2012, Kelvin Beachum was six picks away from being “Mr. Irrelevant”. He wasn’t expected to make the team, let alone compete for a starting position. However after the failure of Mike Adams at left tackle in 2013, Beachum stepped in and was an immediate upgrade, holding onto the position for the next two and a half seasons.
At 6’3” and 302 lbs, Beachum never fit the prototype for an NFL-caliber left tackle. After starting at guard for four seasons at SMU, Beachum moved to tackle because he had excellent pass blocking technique. Despite his undersized frame, he developed into an above average tackle protecting Ben Roethlisberger’s blind side.
Despite tearing his ACL in 2015, Beachum is expected to get a decent pay day on the free agent market. The only Steeler on this list who may not be back in black and gold in 2016, Beachum still cracks the top five for his success compared to his draft stock.
