New York Giants looking to beef up their defensive line
With DE Jason Pierre Paul missing most of 2015, the New York Giants couldn’t rush the passer very well. But when he came back, he didn’t look too bad and an offseason could do him some good. He’s set to be a free agent in a couple of days so it’s not a sure thing he’s going to be back with the team in 2016.
And if he does come back, and he likely will, he’s going to need a partner to rush the passer from the other side. The Giants also need a defensive tackle and there will be a good one for them at No. 10 overall. So it appears the Giants are looking to beef up their defensive line via free agency in the next few days.
So the team had defensive ends Charles Johnson and Mario Williams in for visits on Sunday. Just a few days ago, Williams was cut by the Buffalo Bills and Johnson was cut by the Carolina Panthers. Johnson’s visit was his first since his release while Williams had visited the Miami Dolphins Saturday.
Since both players were released by their teams, they can sign with a team before free agency March 9. But so far, no deals were reached while Johnson will also visit the Tamp Bay Buccaneers soon. The defensive ends would have been $19 million (Williams) and $11-million (Johnson) salary-cap hits in 2016.
Both players had bad years in 2015 while Johnson only played in nine games for the Panthers while Williams didn’t fit the Bills scheme.
So can these two have bounce-back years in 2016?
