They say the running back position is undervalued these days but that looks to be in reverse these days. Impending free agent Denver Broncos running back C.J. Anderson struck a deal with the Miami Dolphins Thursday restricted free agent, has signed a deal worth $18 million over four years.

That leaves the Broncos five days to match the contract after general manager John Elway gave Anderson a low tender. Imagine the kind of contract Anderson would have gotten if he had actually  rushed for over 1,ooo yards in his 3-year career. He does have a career average of 4.8 yards per carry but has never had 200 carries in his career.

Running backs on to maintain that type of average with at least 250 carries to prove they’re that good. It’s one thing to get a couple of little runs in there and another to have the entire opposing defense focused on you. The 250-carry mark is also good for a running back to show he can take the week-to-week pounding in the NFL.

If they don’t, the Broncos would get nothing in return from Miami.

Is this a case of the running back being re-valued or one team’s trash being another team’s treasure?

The Dolphins need a running back to replace Lamarr Miller after he followed the money to the Houston Texans. New Dolphins head coach Adam Gase wants to get the team running the ball and knows Anderson. In his time, from 2013-2014 as the Broncos offensive coordinator, Anderson had some nice little stretches for him.

We’ll see if the Broncos match the Dolphins’ offer.
