Round 2 (Pick #53): Austin Johnson, DL Penn State

In a perfect world, the Redskins would draft two safeties that could start and a whole new defensive line. This isn’t a perfect world of course and the Redskins need to find those prospects who can contribute sooner rather than later so that they can look to the future in other major positions.

If the choice is project like Nkedmiche or lesser talented but more ready to play prospect like Johnson, the Redskins and McCloughan’s draft profiles suggest that they’ll go the latter route. Johnson is one of those “does all the little things well” type prospects who will go higher than he’s currently projected to go.

He stacks and sheds extremely well for a defensive tackle. I personally love his hand use, it makes him looks faster than he really is since he can beat the block and get around the blocker before you know it. And the best part of his game in the film is that he never stops hustling. This is the exact type of player that the Redskins need to anchor their defense around.
