The New England Patriots are trying to put some weapons around quarterback Tom Brady for 2016. They recently signed tight end Martellus Bennett to get back to the double-tight sets they like to use. But still, the Patriots needed a down-the-field weapon to make the Patriots offense more complete.

And a deep threat Nate Washington could very well be the key to what they’re trying to do these days. The Patriots announced Wednesday that they signed Washington, who’s still very fast at 33. This signing is going under the radar as Washington caught only 47 balls for 658 yards and four scores with the Houston Texans last season.

But what was he really going to do in an offense that had Brian Hoyer starting at quarterback. Having Brady as his quarterback is going to put him back on the NFL map as no one knew who Wes Welker, Julian Edelman and Danny Amendola were before Brady used their skill-sets the Patriots’ advantage.

Speed is still a big part of Washington’s skill-set so expect the deep ball to once again be a part of what the Patriots do. Of course, Brady will still dink and dunk his way down the field but now, opposing defenses will have to defend the whole field. A couple of bombs to Washington will open things up for Bennett and fellow tight end Rob Gronkowski.

The Patriots don’t have a 1st-round pick this year so they had to set their passing game up in free agency.

Now they’re set to defend the improving AFC East!
