South Carolina State’s Javon Hargrave has a ton of good things to discuss when developing his scouting report.

Javon Hargrave immediately jumps off the film when watching him take on the level of competition he faced while playing at the FCS level. It’s this type of dominance that allows a small-school prospect to rise up draft boards.

This is a thick and powerful defensive line prospect who could play multiple positions. His wide lower body gives him the ability to hold at the point off attack and stuff the run. He’s stout enough to hold his ground against double teams while also keeping them off pursuing linebackers.

Hargrave brings added value because of his quick burst and lateral quickness. Despite his size, he’s able to explode out of his stance and penetrate the pocket. His main role in the NFL will likely be to defend the run and occupy blockers, but there’s potential for him to do more.

If he’s able to develop into an average pass rusher defensive coordinators will be more included to keep him on the field in passing situations.

His development will be interesting to watch as he’s still pretty raw. Hargrave doesn’t consistently use his hands to take on blockers which will be an issue at the next level. He’ll need to improve his technique in order to have success against the bigger, stronger and faster blockers in the NFL.

However, there’s enough raw athleticism and dominant game film for Hargave to hear his name called on the second day of the draft. Don’t be surprised if he comes off the board in the middle part of the second round.

There just aren’t many prospects who feature his size, athleticism and quickness that also have room to grow. Hargrave’s best football is still ahead of him which could easily see him earn multiple Pro-Bowl selections.
