2016 NFL Draft: Georgia Tech’s Adam Gotsis Scouting Report
By Jon Dove
Georgia Tech’s Adam Gotsis is a high-effort player who has a chance to earn time as part of a defensive line rotation.
Georgia Tech’s Adam Gotsis made plenty of plays throughout his college career. He plays with a high motor and is constantly pursing the football. Georgia Tech didn’t do him many favors as far as his draft stock is concerned by asking him to mainly line up at defensive tackle.
Gotsis lacks the bulk to hold up against double teams and the constant pounding he deals with along the interior. Despite playing out of position, he did a good job fighting off blocks and working his way into the backfield.
He has a knack for slipping off blocks and squeezing through the gaps. This has a lot to do with his non-stop effort, solid burst and leverage. Gotsis is committed to keeping his pads down which helps him gain position work towards the football.
The main issues facing Gotsis is finding a position that fits his skill set. He lacks the size to play defensive tackle, but doesn’t possess the elite burst needed to be an edge rusher. His best spot might be as a five-technique in a 3-4 alignment.
It’s possible that Gotsis struggles to find a starting role in the NFL, but he has enough talent to make a meaningful impact rotating in and out. Defensive linemen need to be fresh in order to really succeed which requires enough bodies capable of stepping in and providing a break.
The problem for a lot of teams is finding those rotational players that don’t represent a major talent drop off when they’re in the lineup. This is where Gotsis may prove to be the most valuable.
